Artist Statement
Walk with me on quiet paths.
Immerse yourself in the familiar, and see it anew.
Let the beauty of the ordinary settle deep within your soul.
I am a contemplative photographer living in central Ohio. My photography combines the native ecosystems where I live with the quiet, observational way I have seen the world since I was a child in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas. Whether I am photographing prairies and big skies, wetlands and lakes, blackbirds and geese, or the ever growing human footprint, I see corners of beauty and moments of stillness in a large and awesome world.
I notice the ordinary, easily overlooked moments: leaves dancing in the wind, light glowing on the water, wildflowers hiding near fence posts, electric poles reaching for the clouds, and autumn leaves slipping into quiet corners.
I return to the same places repeatedly, experiencing familiar towns, neighborhoods, and local nature preserves in changing seasons and light.
I sink into the mood of the moment more than I analyze its shape. I am drawn to light and reflection, textures and movement, elegant lines and the blending of human presence with the natural world. I am more interested in quiet, intimate scenes than dramatic landscapes, and I value restraint, quiet presence, and unobtrusive observation.
I see light, lines, and texture before subject; therefore, my images lean into expressiveness even when their scenes are easily identifiable.
I value truthful representation of what I see; therefore, my photos are grounded in reality, even when not immediately recognizable. I do not stage or alter the scene, instead letting the light and mood guide my camera.
I lean on the principle of Philippians 4:8, that we should think about what is true, right, lovely, and admirable. Thus, I have the goal of producing images that are honest and beautiful, whether through the vibrancy of color or the contrast and texture of black and white, and I process images with restraint, aiming to capture both the reality and the mood of the moment.
