I took this photo of cattails in front of a frozen pond at Prairie Oaks Park in January 2026. I was intrigued by the promise of spring held in the still intact seed heads juxtaposed against the promise of coming deeper cold by both the weather channel and the thickening ice of the pond. It was overcast and dim, about an hour before sunset with none of the ever-coveted golden hour glow. Still, the simplicity of the scene inspired me to think about the yet-to-come beauties of snow and, later, spring.
